Searching with ChatGPT and actually finding the sources that matter

Three decisive statements, three original passages: a source map shows how a search answer becomes a usable basis for a decision.

Tobias uses threads to connect three cards to three open books; one thread ends loose. AI illustration.

An answer names a suitable room, a free Friday and a fitting number of people. Several links sit behind the paragraph. That looks well sourced, but it leaves one crucial question open: which link supports the claim about the date, exactly? Perhaps it only describes the general facilities.

ChatGPT can include web sources in a search. How sources and search activity appear depends on the interface. Web results remain third-party input, and their content does not become reliable simply because it has been used. The source map below is a method of our own, not an automatic quality guarantee from the product.

One claim per line

Our fictional team is looking for a room for a public workshop. What matters is availability on the desired day, suitable capacity and the access that is actually needed. Write these three statements down separately. “The room is suitable and available” already mixes two different questions.

Precision determines which evidence is needed. A general capacity page may give a figure under certain conditions. For the specific Friday, however, you need a corresponding date entry or confirmation. So a link can fit one part of a claim and be insufficient for another.

Read the original passage in its context

Open the source and find the statement in question. Read the surrounding paragraph as well. A number of people may depend on the seating, the way the room is used or a further precondition. Such conditions are part of the content and must not disappear when you summarise.

Note the date of the page as far as it can be seen. A publication date, a modification date and the day you checked it answer different questions. If the source gives none, that remains open. The day on which you look at it does not turn an old statement into a new report.

Claim: room available on the desired Friday.
Source: specific original page or confirmation.
Supporting passage: exact paragraph or sentence.
Status: fully supported / partly supported / open.
Limitation: e.g. confirmation still pending.

This small structure works as a text note or as a table. Its value comes from linking a statement to the passage where it is found, not from a particular file format. Someone can later check the same relationship without reconstructing your entire search conversation.

Use ChatGPT for matching, not for explaining things away

A follow-up instruction might read: “Match these three statements to the named original sources. Give the supporting passage and carry over any limitations. Treat a missing date as a gap.” The response helps with sorting, but it remains another statement in its own right, which you check at the important points.

Partial support is particularly revealing. The source may describe a step-free entrance but say nothing about access to the specific room that has been booked. A correct answer should name this scope instead of deriving complete proof of suitability from one matching word.

Do not automatically treat instructions on third-party web pages as your task. You are researching information about a room. A page may supply you with data, but that does not give it general authority over the decisions in the rest of your work.

Derive the next question from the gap

If the date confirmation is missing, the next step is a targeted enquiry or a suitable official source of availability. More general descriptions of the same room do not close this gap. The map shows which information would actually change your comparison.

A process like this is small enough to start with artificial examples or a single harmless piece of research. No specific ChatGPT search answer was tested for this article. The procedure describes how you can assess an answer once you have it in front of you.

Keep the decisive links together with the statements you used them for. If a date or a condition changes later, you will recognise the planning point it affects. That turns a list of sources into a traceable path from information to decision.
