The answer is short: six binders, delivery Wednesday. Before that, the agent read three notes, recognised a change in quantity and passed over a contradictory date. If the result is wrong, the concise output is of little help. It is precisely this gap between a quick answer and a completed task that makes efficiency in agents a harder question than a glance at the price per amount of text.
MiniMax introduced M3.1 Flash on 19 October 2026. The announcement positions the model for agent work and programming and names the API, M Plan and MiniMax Code as access routes. Weights are announced for a later date. The published performance and cost advantages are vendor claims; they are not the result of a comparison carried out here.
A small task with real dependencies
For an experiment of your own, write three artificial delivery notes. The first mentions four binders for a course. The second confirms six after a follow-up question. The third gives two possible delivery days without settling on either. The desired result consists of the confirmed quantity, the open date and references to the respective notes.
The difficulty therefore does not lie in the length of the final table. The agent has to understand which detail replaces another and which contradiction remains unresolved. A completely filled table can be worse than one with a deliberately open field.
Note 1: 4 binders are needed for course K.
Note 2: Follow-up question settled: for K, explicitly 6 binders, please.
Note 3: Delivery for K on Tuesday or Wednesday; still open.
Alongside this, store a short target rule: quantity six, source note two; date unknown, source note three. You can assess the rule without a model. Later variants of the experiment should keep this basis, otherwise different tasks end up being compared with each other.
What counts as done
Define completion before the run. The overview should take all relevant notes into account, preserve corrections and leave open points visible. It should not change any order. This boundary keeps the first experiment small and makes the result independent of access to production systems.
A possible instruction is: “Merge the three notes for course K. Use the quantity that was most recently confirmed explicitly. For each value you adopt, give the ID of the note. Do not resolve alternative dates by guessing. Produce only a preview of the result.”
If the model asks follow-up questions, note those too. A pertinent follow-up question can be part of a good process. An extra pass is not automatically a mistake; what matters is whether it obtains necessary information or merely repeats work that has already been done.
Measure the whole path
In a later, actual comparison, you should record at least the model and service identifiers, the inputs, the result and the human corrections required. If you evaluate cost or duration, start and finish at the same points of the workflow. Measuring only the last answer leaves out any preliminary stages.
Also separate three quantities: the price of the technical call, the number of calls needed and the effort of reworking the result. A cheap call loses its practical advantage if someone afterwards has to add sources and laboriously correct wrong dates. Conversely, an extra clarification step can make sense if it prevents a wrong value from being carried over.
For the mini task, a simple list of results is enough: quantity correct, date open, source references present, unauthorised action not taken. These criteria explain why a run would be usable. An artificially precise overall score, by contrast, easily hides the fact that a single wrong quantity is decisive for the task.
What a model announcement makes of this
MiniMax’s release is interesting because it explicitly steers the discussion towards complete agent tasks. Your own choice should start from a process you understand. You do not need to replay someone else’s leaderboard to see whether a system merges corrections cleanly.
A small experiment does not yet allow a verdict on arbitrary business processes. It does, however, show where you need to look: at the relationship between sources, decisions and the steps carried out. The shortest answer is then merely the visible end of work that can be traced.
